Ottawa Senators head coach and former long-time OHL coach D.J. Smith has been announced as a speaker for the final evening of the 2021 OHL Coaches Conference.
Smith joins an NHL lineup of speakers set to present Tuesday, August 10 that includes Mark Fitzgerald, former strength and conditioning coach with the Anaheim Ducks and founder of Elite Training Systems, and Paul McFarland, Seattle Kraken assistant coach and former Kingston Frontenacs head coach and general manager.
The former Oshawa Generals head coach and three-time Memorial Cup champion was named head coach of the Senators ahead of the 2019-20 season following four years as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In three seasons as head coach in Oshawa, Smith held a record of 135-53-3-13 and was the OHL’s Coach of the Year in 2014 before guiding the team to an OHL Championship and a Memorial Cup title the following season.
Prior to his time in Oshawa, Smith spent six seasons as an assistant coach with the Windsor Spitfires and helped them to back-to-back Memorial Cup titles in 2009 and 2010. Before embarking on his coaching career, Smith played with his hometown Windsor Spitfires from 1994-97 before eight seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche organizations that included 45 NHL games.
The final evening of the virtual three-day event will commence at 7:00pm and conclude at 9:30pm. The cost of the event is $150 and includes a recording of all sessions.
