Hockey starts preseason with home win over Laurier


OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ontario Tech men’s hockey team kicked off their preseason play with a 2-1 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks on home ice Thursday night. 

Brett Harasymuk (Yorkton, Sask.) scored short-handed 9:45 into the second period, assisted by Matthieu Gomercic (Winnipeg, Man.), to open the scoring. 

James White (Hamilton, Ont.) scored his first goal as a Ridgeback on the power play, 2:51 in the third. Cullen Mclean (Whitby, Ont.) assisted on the goal.

Laurier kept the Ridgebacks from shutting them out, as Grayden Gottaschalk scored with just over five minutes to go in regulation.

Both teams split time in goal, with Leif Hertz (Kingston, Ont.) and Michael Bullion (Anchorage, Alaska) combining for 30 saves in the Ontario Tech win. Christian Propp and Tyler Fassl made 34 saves in Laurier’s loss.

The Ridgebacks will face the Golden Laurier Hawks again in Waterloo on Saturday evening, playing the second game of their home-and-home series.
