The Ontario Tech men’s hockey team is adding Quebec native William Desmarais between the pipes for the 2022-23 season.
Remaining in his hometown of Sherbrooke, Que., Desmarais spent his 2019-20 season in the line-up with Ligue de Hockey Collégiale du Québec Division 1’s (QCHL) Collège Champlain-Lennoxville Cougars. Playing a total of 25 games, Desmarais had a GAA of 1.96, ending the team’s season with a 17-7-0 record.
Desmarais joined the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s (MJHL) Selkirk Steelers during his 2020-21 season, yet was traded to Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) to secure a spot with the Ottawa Jr. Senators for their 2021-22 line-up.
Desmarais was named to the all-star team, as well as the league’s performer of the month for November. Desmarais spent the season with Ottawa playing a total of 35 games and earning 27 victories.
He established himself last season as one of the top goaltenders in the league, wrapping up with an impressive 2.05 goals-against-average and a saving percentage of 0.927.
“Will is the perfect character and personality for a top tier goaltender,” said Ottawa Jr. Senators head coach Kyle Makaric. “He is a great teammate and the guys love him and will go through a wall to help him achieve success and in turn that leads to team results. He takes practices as seriously as games and if you scored one on him in practice he was sure to remember it and be sure to not let you score that next time. That competitiveness was his way of pushing our guys and making them dig deeper every day.”
The Jr. Senators finished their season with a 56-10-4-2 record, where they competed for the Centennial Cup and came just shy of making it to the quarter-final after Desmarais made a stellar 29 saves.
Ontario Tech hockey head coach Curtis Hodgins is looking forward to adding Desmarais to the line-up this coming season.
“William is an extremely quick and strong positional goaltender who competes very hard,” said Hodgins. “He is coming off a fantastic season where he led his team to the Centennial Cup and he looks poised to continue his growth at the U SPORTS level and be really solid in our net. We look forward to welcoming William to Ontario Tech in September.”
