Ridgebacks welcome Gillis to men’s hockey program

The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks have added another skilled forward to their 2022-23 recruiting class with the addition of Sam Gillis from the Yarmouth Mariners.
Born in Sydney, N.S., Gillis has spent the last four seasons playing in the MHL for the Yarmouth Mariners and this year had 21 goals and 32 assists, helping the team make the playoffs and tying him for sixth in the league in scoring with fellow Ridgeback recruit Gabriel Bernier (Fredericton Red Wings).
Over four seasons he finished with 69 goals and 171 points in 170 regular season games.
Laurie Barron, head coach and general manager of the Yarmouth Mariners remembers seeing Gillis for the first time as a 16-year-old in their camp and wasted no time picking him up at the next opportunity.
“We took him as our first round pick the next season,” said Barron. “Sam turned into a top end talent who could take over a game and scored some of the prettiest goals that I have seen in my time in Yarmouth. He’s able to make plays at top speed and his first two strides and quickness is next level. Curtis and Ontario Tech are getting a good one.”
Gillis joins a growing list of Mariners on the Ridgebacks in recent years, including Leif Hertz, Noah McMullin and Matt Barron.
“We have been very fortunate to have had a few talented Yarmouth players come through our program in the last several years and Sam will be another good one for us,” said Ridgebacks head coach Curtis Hodgins. “He is a very talented forward who can skate and make plays and will be a nice addition as we look to increase our skill level up front.”
