OSHAWA, Ont. – Ontario Tech’s Natalie Wozney (Whitby, Ont.) has been named to the Canadian women’s hockey team that will compete at the FISU Winter Universiade from December 11-21 in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Wozney becomes the fifth Ridgeback female to represent Canada at the FISU games, joining women’s soccer players Katherine Koehler-Grassau, Kylie Bordeleau, Alyssa Nikkel and women’s hockey player Kassidy Nauboris. Men’s hockey players Alex Yuill and Jack Patterson also represented Canada at the 2019 Winter Universiade.

“This is a huge honour and we’re so proud of Natalie that she will have this opportunity to represent Canada in Switzerland on an international stage,” said Ontario Tech athletic director Scott Barker. “Since joining the Ridgebacks, she has played a major role in our on-ice performance and we’re looking forward to seeing how she can help the country be successful, hopefully winning a medal in back-to-back winter Universiades.”

In 2019-20, her first season with Ontario Tech, Wozney finished with 11 goals and 23 points in her 24 games played. Through two conference games in 2021-22, she has an assist.

“I am proud to represent my country especially as a female hockey player. It’s what I have always dreamed about doing since I was a little girl playing Timbits hockey,” said Wozney. “Playing in the OUA gave me a chance at this amazing opportunity and playing last season gave me the confidence I need to be prepared to play at this level.”

Nine teams from seven sports will travel to Switzerland to take part in the event, originally scheduled for January 2021. Canada will compete in ice hockey (W & M), curling (W & M), alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, biathlon, snowboarding and short track speed skating. This is the first FISU Universiade since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overall, some 144 people will be exhibiting the Maple Leaf in and around Lucerne, including coaches and mission staff.
