Pickering, ON, November 24, 2021 – At last Monday’s City Council meeting, the City of Pickering declared the seat of City Councillor, Ward 2, vacant due to the passing of Ian Cumming.

Under the Municipal Elections Act (MEA), the vacant seat must be filled for the remainder of this term. And as such, Council voted in favour of appointing an individual from the public by soliciting applications.

To qualify to hold office, candidates must:

  • Reside in Pickering or be the owner or tenant of land, or the spouse of such owner or tenant
  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Not be prohibited from voting under the MEA or otherwise by law

All interested and qualified individuals are required to make an appointment with the City Clerk and submit the necessary documentation in-person between November 25 to December 17 at 4:30 pm. To schedule an appointment, applicants must call 905.420.4611 or email clerks@pickering.ca.

The City Clerk will verify which applicants meet the criteria under the MEA. The vetted and approved applicants will then attend an electronic Special Meeting of Council sometime in January, where they will have an opportunity to present their qualifications and rationales to Members of Council. At the conclusion of the presentations, Council will then appoint the individual who they feel can best represent the interim interests of Ward 2 residents.

The successful candidate should expect to take their seat at the January 24, 2022 Council meeting.

The City encourages all interested parties to visit pickering.ca/CouncilVacancy to learn more about the application process and review all of the required documentation.
