Pickering, ON, September 2, 2021 – Yesterday, the City of Pickering partnered with Canada Bread Company Ltd. to plant 100 native shrubs around Pine Creek.
This beautiful natural space provides a diverse habitat for plants and animals. Pickering residents also enjoy the area for dog walking, leisurely strolls, and cycling.
Unfortunately, urban forest conditions have been negatively impacted by wildlife activity and invasive species. These native shrubs will help to restore the ecological benefits the vegetation provides.
Since 2018 the City of Pickering has partnered with Canada Bread on many community enhancement projects as part of the company’s Good Neighbour Program.
In addition, Canada Bread also gifted native plants to five pollinator garden projects throughout Pickering to help support butterfly and bee populations.
“I am proud of this partnership and the actions being taken to help restore the natural area around Pine Creek,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “Canada Bread possesses true community leadership, and has strongly demonstrated its commitment to sustainability. By working with like-minded organizations, we are able to make a meaningful difference for both our diverse habitat and residents.”
“The Good Neighbour program aims to make a difference in the communities that we live and work in,” said Joe McCarthy, President, Canada Bread. “The program promotes community projects that align to our purpose of building a sustainable, highly productive and deeply humane company. By giving back to the communities that we operate in, we directly support local organizations and promote healthier lifestyles.”
