Message from Mayor Bobbie Drew
On July 12, 2021 the Penelakut Tribe in British Columbia shared the heartbreaking discovery of more than 160 unmarked graves at the former Kuper Island Residential School. It is very sobering and devastating to know that more children will continue to be found in the future. We know words are not enough, but we want to express our sadness for the Penelakut Tribe and for the families and survivors of this dark time in Canadian history.
The flags at the Township of Scugog facilities have been lowered to half-mast out of respect for the children and their families.
The Township of Scugog values our relationship with our Indigenous neighbours. We bow our heads at the stark truth of these findings. We look to the Federal government for leadership and we want all levels of government to prioritize the 94 Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
